About this book
The Evolution of an English Town tells the story of the ancient town of Pickering in Yorkshire from prehistoric times. The preface credits the vicar's suggestion, cooperation and help from people in the town and surrounding villages with contributing to the history. The account of the castle says whole towers and all interior buildings except the chapel have disappeared since an earlier description.
The author says that, if stories of troops quartered in Pickering church are true, whitewash probably hid the wall-paintings from their view. The description of Aislaby identifies the Hall as a large stone house close to the road on its south side.
