About this book

Tales from the German, Volume I, is attributed to C. F. van der Velde and is marked as translated by Nathaniel Greene. The translator's preface says that most men have, or may have, occasional hours of leisure and relaxation, and that to spend those hours harmlessly is a duty. A character named Arwed says mournfully to himself that the ruins of the royal castle almost appear to him to be symbols of the decay of this noble realm.

Two ladies in plain dark cloaks and white veils step from a boat, and Arwed cries Georgina in ecstasy, springing towards her. Arwed says with a bitter smile that he is a prisoner of state in Sweden. A passage describes a subterranean world with miserable huts and wooden booths erected among the rocks and a larger hut with a small belfry which denoted the church of the immense abyss.
