About this book
The Silver Cross, or The Carpenter of Nazareth, is described as a translation from the French of Eugene Sue. The preface says Eugene Sue wrote in French a monumental work, "The Mysteries of the People," or "History of a Proletarian Family."
Pontius Pilate replies to some seigneurs that they are wrong to alarm themselves, and says to let the Nazarene speak, and his words will pass like the wind. The learned doctor, addressed as Seigneur Baruch, says he wishes the Nazarene harm, because the Nazarene has insulted him personally and all his brethren of the senate in his person. Jesus says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs!" and also "Woe to you who are satisfied, for you shall be hungry!" Genevieve sees a great many women, standing at their doors, lamenting the fate of the young man of Nazareth.
