About this book

Spanish Papers is a book by Washington Irving. The preface by the editor says that a limited edition of the Legends of the Conquest of Spain, with which this volume commences, was published in 1835. The preface says the Legends consist of the Legend of Don Roderick, the Legend of the Subjugation of Spain and the Legend of Count Julian and his Family.

Count Julian goes on to complete his web of treason, aided by his brother-in-law, Oppas, the Bishop of Seville. The ambassadors invite someone to accept the sovereignty of one of the noblest countries in the world; when they cease, Abderahman remains for a time lost in wonder and admiration. Garci Perez draws near to the Infanzon and says, “you may well dispute my right to wear this honorable device in my shield, since you see I take so little care of it that it is almost destroyed.”
