About this book
The Science of Human Nature: A Psychology for Beginners is by William Henry Pyle, Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Missouri, in the Teacher Training Series edited by W. W. Charters. The preface says it is written for young students in high schools and normal schools, and asks questions such as why we act as we do and how we can make ourselves more efficient.
In one passage the author explains sensation and the memory idea in terms of brain activity, and argues that psychology must study a person both from the outside, by action, and from the inside, as consciousness. Another passage turns to drill, which it calls usually the hardest part of school work and a means to efficiency, with writing and reading as examples. A passage on influencing people names employers, ministers and statesmen as those who need to know how to do it.
