About this book
With twenty pennies in his pocket, Teddy Thurston arrives in the city determined to earn his living by selling newspapers. His first encounter with the local newsboys begins at a fountain, where his careful washing and brushing provoke their ridicule. Teddy answers their threats with blunt confidence. The opening makes everyday matters, from buying supper to finding a place to work, the stakes of a boy's bid for independence.
James Otis builds this children's novel around newspaper vendors, friendship, diligence and rivalry. Lively dialogue gives the boys distinct voices, while a comic account of troublesome farm animals and an unpromising breakfast brings another kind of working life into view.
