About this book

After his fruit stand fails, Joe Potter has sixteen cents left and an uncertain future on the city streets. His friend Plums sells newspapers near Grand Central Station, and their talk turns from lost earnings to possible work. James Otis builds this children's novel around boys who must think about rent, wages and food while trying to deal fairly with one another.

A later scene brings Joe and Plums to Aunt Dorcas Milford's house, where a meal and a garden offer a different view of everyday life. Joe helps prepare the ground under her direction, then describes the makeshift places where he has slept. Her growing concern gives these conversations their weight. With missing children among its subjects, the story combines adventure with close attention to poverty, friendship and the comfort of a dependable home. Readers interested in older stories of working children will find the boys' practical worries especially concrete.
