About this book
The title page calls this a symposium of ancient and modern methods of telling fortunes by cards, as practiced by Arab seers and sibyls and the Romany gypsies, with plain examples and simple instructions. It is by Mohammed Ali and edited by Carleton B. Case. The contents include How to Acquire the Art, The Consultant Card, The Ancient Oracle, Methods A to M, The Preferred Oracle with thirty-two cards, and dictionaries of primary and secondary definitions.
The text explains that any ordinary pack of playing cards can be used, though a pack with single-headed face cards is best, since a reversed card can carry a different meaning. A dot or cross in pencil or pen marks the top of certain cards. Entries give meanings for single cards, upright and reversed, with the seven of spades read as hope, and other pages lay out sample deals row by row.
