About this book
Ten Days in a Mad-House; or, Nellie Bly's Experience on Blackwell's Island is Nellie Bly's first-person account. The title page describes her as the New York World's girl correspondent and the book as an ordeal undertaken to reveal conditions in an asylum.
In one scene she gives the name Nellie Brown and says her home is in Cuba. A doctor writes her answers in a large book, and he and the nurse, Miss Grupe, talk about a notice in the papers, and the doctor asks her age, which she gives as nineteen last May, and has her measured. In another passage a red-haired Irish girl, back again, describes a household where she had worked as a laundress. In a third, a nurse tells Nellie Brown that a doctor wishes to speak with her, and she looks up from beneath a blanket to see a young man with the air of a gentleman.
