About this book

Nine-year-old Nelly Grey has grown up in China, speaking both English and Chinese within the British Legation compound in Peking. Her companions include children from other legations and Little Yi, a Chinese girl of her own age. When Nelly ventures outside to look for her father, Little Yi goes with her, and their familiar surroundings give way to the dangers of becoming lost.

Eleanor Raper's children's story combines this adventure with descriptions of courtyard houses, language lessons, family routines, and Christian faith. In a later scene, a neighbour named Chang hears of the children's plight and talks with his family about helping them return to Peking. The contrast between Nelly's protected daily life and her uncertain circumstances gives the story its tension. Its details of friendship and household life also offer a view of how China was presented to young British readers in 1902.
