About this book

Uncle Sam's Boys as Lieutenants, or Serving Old Glory as Line Officers, is by H. Irving Hancock. The contents give a first chapter, On Waiting Orders, in which Uncle Sam's Boys grow impatient and the postman's whistle makes Hal nervous. Two youthful soldiers, ordered home from the Philippines to undergo their final examination for commissions, were sent before a board of Army officers at Fort Leavenworth.

Mrs. Overton asks Noll why he does not put on his uniform to-night and bring his mother over here, so that Hal can put on his uniform and both can take their mothers out this evening. Hal heads the patrol at one end of a stretch of water-front some three miles in length, where sentries are told to conceal themselves in order to catch any band of rebel smugglers in the act of loading war munitions on a craft. Lieutenant Hal leads the remainder of the troops through the streets, and wherever bands of rioters are found they are herded and driven out of the town.
