About this book

The Aboriginal Population of the North Coast of California is by S. F. Cook, and appears as Anthropological Records Vol. 16, No. 3. The contents list sections on, among others, the Yurok, the Wiyot, the Karok, the Hupa and the Tolowa. On counting houses, the text says the number of house pits observed many years after the village itself has disappeared is likely to be unreliable for many reasons, although it may be used as a first approximation in default of better data.

The text names a safer guide: the memory of reliable informants or actual house counts made by explorers or original settlers. The text gives 9,730 persons for the Yukian divisions, including the Coast Yuki and the Huchnom, and 15,450 for the Athapascan tribes collectively, for a combined total of 25,180. A quoted description places, within a distance of no more than One Hundred miles in length and twenty in width, including the Napa Valley, five distinct nations, no one of which could converse together without an interpreter.
