About this book
Benet Pengilly introduces himself from the pillory in Truro, bruised, angry and determined to tell his own story. Among the watching crowd stands Rodrigues, a seafarer whose lavish spending has left his former finery in ruins. Frank Barrett gives this adventure novel the voice of a rough, self-conscious storyteller recounting encounters with pirates, hazardous voyages and captivity.
Lady Biddy Fane brings a different judgment to the hardships she shares with Benet. In one passage, the pair approach strangers on a rocky shore. Struggling to communicate through several languages and gestures, they accept an offer of help. When they hear enslaved people being punished, Biddy argues that oppression gives them reason to fear white strangers, and her compassion checks Benet's anger. Readers interested in sea adventures can also follow the contrast between his protective pride and her readiness to understand other people.
