About this book

An expedition bound for the Northwest Passage brings officers and townspeople together at a ball in an English port. Clara Burnham dances among them while her friend Mrs. Crayford tells Captain Helding about Clara's trances and belief in second sight. Their conversation introduces a tension between reported visions, medical explanations and private anxieties, beneath the bustle of a public celebration.

Wilkie Collins arranges this adventure novel in scenes, with settings that include a ballroom, a polar hut and an iceberg. In the hut, Richard Wardour questions Frank about Clara, and Frank reveals that they are engaged. Lieutenant Crayford watches the exchange closely and recognizes the personal rivalry behind Wardour's strained behavior. The Arctic setting places these uneasy relationships alongside the demands of exploration and survival. Readers interested in suspense built through dialogue will find revealing pauses, abrupt changes of temper and competing interpretations of what people say.

About the author

Wilkie Collins

Collins wrote The Woman in White for Dickens's magazine and then The Moonstone, which is usually called the first English detective novel and gave the form Sergeant Cuff, the country-house theft and the unreliable multiple narration.
