About this book
Name and Fame is a novel by Adeline Sergeant. The contents list names chapters called, among others, Lettice Receives a Visitor, The Poet Speaks and Sydney Gives Advice.
A girl of sixteen comes out of the Rectory door on a late autumn afternoon and walks to the boat-house, as if intending to launch out upon the water. The girl has a very sweet and happy smile about the corners of her sensitive mouth, but a slightly wistful look in her long-lashed grey eyes. A letter signed Alan Walcott tells the person addressed that he has read that person's book, that he writes only to give thanks for the pleasure and the courage it has given him, and that it is a great work. Sydney says he cannot even see her, since she faints if he goes into the room, and asks Lettice how long it will last; Lettice answers that if she loves him she thinks she will get over it, but he must give her time.
