Fleeing the ruins of fallen Troy, the hero Aeneas is destined by the gods to found the race that will one day build Rome, and Virgil’s great epic follows his storm-tossed voyages, his tragic love affair with Queen Dido of Carthage, his descent into the underworld, and the war he must wage in Italy. Composed as a national epic for the Roman people, it weaves together myth, history, duty, and destiny in majestic verse. Second only to Homer in the ancient epic tradition, the Aeneid profoundly shaped Western literature and gave the world unforgettable scenes of love, loss, and fate. It remains a towering monument of world poetry.
About the Author
Virgil (70-19 BC) was the greatest of the Roman poets, author of the Aeneid, the Eclogues, and the Georgics. His epic became the defining poem of Rome and a cornerstone of Western literature.
