About this book
This is the Æneid of Virgil in an English verse translation by E. Fairfax Taylor, set in numbered, rhymed stanzas. The title page dates the edition 1907, reprinted 1910. An introduction gives the life of Virgil: born at Andes near Mantua in 70 B.C., he was educated first at Cremona and Milan and afterwards at Rome.
In one passage winds rush out of a hollow mountain and fall on the sea, clouds hide the daylight from the Trojans, and Æneas stretches his hands in prayer, wishing he had perished on the plains of Troy. In another, a goddess who calls herself Jove's consort says that Æneas has vanquished her and that if Heaven will not help she will turn to Hell. In a third, Æneas poises his spear and calls on Turnus to stop delaying.
