The Aeneid of Virgil
Fleeing the ruins of Troy, the hero Aeneas carries his father on his back and his household gods in his hands, bound by fate for a land he has never seen. Virgil’s epic follows him across the Mediterranean, through the doomed love of Dido in Carthage, down into the underworld, and into the wars that will plant the seeds of Rome. Written for the age of Augustus, the poem gave Rome its founding myth while quietly mourning the cost of empire and the price paid by the defeated. About the Author
Virgil (70-19 BC) was the greatest of the Roman poets, author of the Aeneid, the Eclogues, and the Georgics. His epic became the defining poem of Rome and a cornerstone of Western literature.
