About this book

Black Sorter gulps down ten thousand pieces of first-class mail, and the mail-sorting machine's intake produces shaking and a blue electric glow. The rejected envelope passes through several machines before reaching Pink Wastebasket, whose response is to turn bright crimson and begin trembling almost instantly. Pink Wastebasket is designed to scan thousands of codes, route special-delivery spacemail to interplanetary liners by messenger rocket, and distinguish 9s from upside-down 6s.

Potshelter remarks approvingly on the simplicity of a new bread advertisement delivered in an on-the-hour phono-commercial. A speaker says that even without a crisis he must budget his listening time, allowing a minute per hour between duty and self-indulgence.

Fritz Leiber - BDeBooks
Fritz Leiber

Fritz Leiber (1910-1992) was an American author who moved fluidly among science fiction, fantasy, and horror. He created the roguish duo Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser and coined the term sword and sorcery, while his modern supernatural tales helped shape urban horror. He won multiple Hugo and Nebula awards.
