About this book
The American Type of Isthmian Canal is a speech by Hon. John Fairfield Dryden in the Senate of the United States, June 14, 1906. The speaker says the Panama Canal presents at once the most interesting and the most stupendous project of mankind to overcome by human ingenuity "what Nature herself seems to have attempted, but in vain." The speaker says the evidence and opinions are as far apart and as irreconcilable as the final conclusions themselves.
The speaker also says the opinion of eminent experts is so widely at variance that there is little, if any, hope of an ultimate reconciliation. The speaker puts the choice as one plan or the other, a sea-level or a lock canal. The speaker describes something that has been in existence and successful operation, he thinks, since 1681, with ninety-nine locks and viaducts and an octuple lock, or eight locks in flight, like a ladder from the top of a cliff to the valley below.
