About this book
Fox's search for religious guidance gives this verse history a personal focus. An unnamed author follows his turn toward an inward teacher, his preaching across Britain, and his travels to Holland and North America. The poem presents the beliefs of early Friends about worship, peace and spiritual authority, then introduces William Penn aboard a ship on the Delaware, among fellow believers seeking refuge.
Later scenes honor Barclay's religious writing and describe the imprisonment of early Friends. Children in Bristol continue to gather for worship after their parents are jailed, while two women ministers in Malta face pressure to abandon their faith. Written from within this religious community, the poem links personal conviction with the endurance of its members. Readers interested in religious history or historical verse will find an account of how early Friends remembered their teachers and their suffering.
