About this book
Old legends heard from Italian country people and found in early books become narrative poems in Francesca Alexander's collection. Her introductory letter explains how she turned the tales into rhyme, memorising them so that she could record them gradually when writing became difficult. The verse preface gives that purpose a domestic setting: an elderly storyteller welcomes children to her room and draws on a shelf of worn books to entertain them.
Faith, charity and the value of humble service shape these stories. The title poem opens with a hermit seeking spiritual perfection in a rocky mountain retreat. Elsewhere, Bishop Troilus accompanies a Patriarch through a hospital, where care for the patients tests attachment to money and rank. Readers interested in religious folklore or stories told in verse can find here a close connection between everyday kindness, moral choices and belief.
