About this book

The Angels of Mons is by Arthur Machen, with the subtitle The Bowmen and Other Legends of the War. The introduction says it was asked for on the publication in book form of the story of "The Bowmen" together with three other tales. The introduction calls the affair of "The Bowmen" an odd one from first to last, with many currents and cross-currents of rumour and speculation.

The introduction describes a conceived story of dead men coming up through the flames and being welcomed in the Eternal Tavern with songs and flowing cups. In one scene a man in black puts a hand gently on a soldier's shoulder and asks about the soldier's wound. Miss Campbell says she was in France when the war broke out, and that she became a nurse.

Arthur Machen

Arthur Machen (1863 to 1947) was a Welsh writer whose supernatural stories are landmarks of weird fiction. Working in obscurity for much of his life, he came to be recognised as one of the great masters of horror and the uncanny.
