The Anguish of the Jews

Edward H. Flannery was a Roman Catholic priest, and his history traces twenty-three centuries of hostility to Jews, from the ancient world through to the present day. The book was unusual when it first appeared because it came from inside the church and did not spare the church’s own record. The revised edition extends the account by two further decades and takes in events in the Middle East. Flannery’s argument is that the hostility has a long Christian history which Christians have generally preferred not to examine, and that taking Judaism seriously changed Christian theology in return.
