About this book
The title page of The Antiquities of Constantinople offers a description of its situation, the conveniencies of its port, its publick buildings, the statuary, sculpture, architecture, and other curiosities of that city. The title page also says the work was written originally in Latin and is now translated into English. The title page says the work is in four books, with cuts explaining the chief of them.
A list of entries with page numbers gives, under Constantinople, among others, its delightful situation, its strength, its commodities and the conveniencies of its port. The text cites Zonaras for a fire caused by a faction that burnt down the great Church, that of St. Irene, the Hospital of Eubulus, the Chalca, the Bagnio of Severus, and many other buildings. Justinian asserts in his Constitutions that it is agreeable to equity, if a corpse be carried to the grave to a great distance, that the deacons attending it should have some acknowledgment.
