About this book
From a Terrace in Prague is a set of reflections or meditations by B. Granville Baker, inspired by the sight of a fine old capital city. The book is dedicated to a wise and gentle lady who looks out upon life from a terrace. The preface gives a first reason, which may be altruistic, that so many of the author's race are found quite ignorant of Prague and all that city stands for right down the ages.
The narrative moves along to Eger or Cheb, where a last reminder of the Hohenstaufen stands in the ruins of a castle, and on into the ancient land of Bohemia, past Marienbad. Charles, who was of a careful, saving disposition, raised funds out of other people's purses, calling on the butchers of Prague and on taxes and excise duties, and endowed Emaus with landed property, farms and fields and vineyards. A garden holds a delectable collection of old Bohemian and Moravian costumes, furniture and household goods, and Charles IV caused the Famine Wall to be built to provide work during a lean year.
