About this book
Ralph Barton Perry, named on the title page as assistant professor of philosophy in Harvard University, wrote The Approach to Philosophy. The preface begins by citing an essay by Professor Edward Caird, and the volume is dedicated to the author's father.
One passage describes life as self-conscious opportunity and gives the allegory of the centipede, which walked with perfect skill until it discovered itself walking and lost the knack. In another, motion by pressure in a plenum meets Newton's action at a distance, and the text quotes Voltaire, who in 1728 wrote from London comparing Paris, where the world was full of matter, with London, where he found vacuums. Notes in the back refer to James, to Plato's Theaetetus in Jowett's translation, and to Caird.
