About this book
The Making of Arguments by J. H. Gardiner sets out a course in the writing of arguments. The preface says that few men have either the capacity or the need to become highly trained specialists in the making of arguments, but that all men need some knowledge of the art. The preface also says the book is especially aimed at the interests and needs of the student body as a whole, rather than at students who are doing advanced work in argumentation.
A run of numbered statements in the book includes This city should buy and run the waterworks and The present rules of football are satisfactory. The text advises that when a piece of reasoning seems suspicious, expanding it into a full syllogism lays all its parts bare for scrutiny. One passage says there is nothing in the Workman's Compensation Act which violates the letter of the Constitution.
