About this book
The historical account says that powers seem to have been gradually delegated to the chief Florentine citizens, especially during conflicts with the Emperor Henry. The narrative says that the Florentine Republic asserted its independence when Matilda died and the Popes and Emperors prepared to struggle for her legacy. The historical account records that Fiesole was taken and destroyed in 1125, describing the place as a refuge for robber nobles and opponents of the Republic.
The description of the Via Ghibellina places the Prisons almost at the street's end, on the site of the famous convent of Le Murate. The account says that Caterina Sforza, the dethroned Lady of Forlì and mother of Giovanni delle Bande Nere, ended her days in a convent in 1509.
