About this book
The Armourer and His Craft from the XIth to the XVIth Century is Charles Ffoulkes's study of armour and the people who made it. The pages sampled are full of plates and documents. A list of illustrations names armour of Sir Christopher Hatton in the Royal Armoury at Windsor Castle, drawings by Jacobe Topf, a helm from the tomb of Sir Richard Pembridge at Hereford Cathedral, and armour by Tomaso da Missaglia.
The appendices print records. One is a proclamation dated 4 February 1618 against the excessive use of gold and silver foliate, which was to be confined to armour and ensigns of honour. A price list gives a footman's armour, with breast, back, gorget and head piece, at 1 pound 10 shillings. Other entries note payments for cleaning and repairing armour at the Tower, Hampton Court and Greenwich at tenpence a day in 1567, and an inventory of the armoury at Hengrave dated 1603.
