About this book
The Art and Practice of Hawking by E. B. Michell concerns the character of hawking and the ways the sport is conducted. The work gives precedence to long-winged hawks, followed by short-winged hawks, with a third place for eagles known to have been flown at game. The description of short-winged hawks identifies a comparatively short outer wing joint, a rounded appearance when spread, and a very short first primary.
The advice on gull hunting warns that gulls usually escape in high winds and recommends avoiding those conditions for fear of discouraging the hawk. Peregrines are to be introduced to bagged gulls and fed pigeon or some very palatable food after a kill. The discussion of screaming notes that some hawks persist despite the advantages enjoyed by an eyess, and that screaming with the hood on is rare.
