About this book
Chess History and Reminiscences is a book by H. E. Bird. The contents list names, among others, the origin of chess, theories as to its invention and the three Indian traditions. Further headings in the contents list, among others, are India, China, Egypt, the ancient Greeks and Romans, Scandinavia and Persia.
The book carries a dedication to W. J. Evelyn, Esq., of Wotton, Surrey, a highly esteemed chess opponent and patron of nearly 40 years. The text says that 1858 welcomed the invincible Paul Morphy of New Orleans, considered by some superior even to La Bourdonnais, Staunton and Anderssen. The text remarks that there are some who will buy chess books who would not care to play at least in a public room on any conditions.
