About this book

Colour, stitch counts and repeated rows organise Cornelia Mee's 1846 handbook of knitting patterns. Exercises in Knitting begins with twelve designs for chair covers, including leaf, diamond and openwork patterns, and explains how some can be adapted for doilies or shawls. Mee specifies wool, needle sizes and sequences of shades alongside the instructions, making the appearance of the finished fabric part of the practical work.

The collection extends from household furnishings to clothing and small accessories. Patterns include baby shoes, caps, cuffs, mittens and comforters, while the middle excerpt gives detailed directions for a striped muff and a fine white Shetland shawl. Instructions proceed row by row in the terminology of the period. For readers interested in historic needlework, the book offers both projects to study and a close view of how nineteenth-century knitters planned texture, colour and decorative edges.
