About this book
The Art of Perfumery, and Method of Obtaining the Odors of Plants is by G. W. Septimus Piesse. One passage describes a drying house for herbs, where bunches hang from the rafters, rose leaves and other petals dry in warm cupboards and flower buds lie on canvas trays. The full title promises instructions for making perfumes for the handkerchief, scented powders, odorous vinegars, dentifrices, pomatums, cosmetiques and perfumed soap, with an appendix on the colors of flowers.
Another passage on the history of perfume speaks of incense burned in temples, of what Pliny and Seneca wrote about perfume drugs, and of the boxes called Narthecia. Another mentions a vase in the British Museum meant to hold a lamp and small vases of flower oils. A further section by Dr. A. W. Hofmann discusses the essential oil of Gaultheria procumbens and its use in perfumery.
