About this book
The book studies the outward features and surroundings of old Athenian dramatic performances, taking the theatrical rather than the literary point of view. The discussion of permanent stage doors says that the remains of purely Greek theatres are too defective to establish how many doors those buildings possessed. The account of permanent doors attributes at least five entrances in the Hellenistic type of theatre to the statements of Pollux.
The account of scenery says that three entrances appear always to have been used when a scene represented a palace, temple, or dwelling-house. The discussion of stage height questions whether actors and chorus in early dramas could have been separated by a barrier about twelve feet high.
