About this book

Albert A. Hopkins compiled and edited this large volume on magic, stage illusions and scientific amusements, with trick photography named in the title. Henry Ridgely Evans wrote the introduction, and the title page announces four hundred illustrations. The preface says the work fills a place of its own among the many books on natural magic and sleight of hand. Articles from Scientific American and its Supplement are used in it.

The pages sampled range widely. One passage tells how the conjurer De Grisi had a jeweler buy a watch and engrave a Cardinal's coat of arms inside the case, then borrowed the Cardinal's watch before the Pope. Another explains, with toothed wheels, screws and cubits, how a vehicle can measure the distance it travels. A third describes a prisoner's escape: a board hung by chains, with levers joined to a central rocking lever so that all the shackles are released together.
