About this book
The Author's Craft is by Arnold Bennett and carries a list of his works that names, among others, the novels A Man from the North, Anna of the Five Towns and Leonora. Part III, headed "Writing Plays", takes up the idea, fostered as a rule by critics who have written neither novels nor plays, that it is more difficult to write a play than a novel. Part III goes on with a first-person claim of having written or collaborated in about twenty novels and about twenty plays, and a conviction that it is easier to write a play than a novel.
A scene with a conductor and policemen has the conductor and one of the policemen writing while the traffic makes beautiful curves to avoid them and the crowd continues to stare. Flaubert is named as the classic modern example of the tragedy of the artist who repudiates the world, one who at an early age convinced himself that he had no use for the world of men.
