About this book
This is John Oxenford's translation of Goethe's Truth and Poetry: From My Own Life, Books I to XX, in a revised edition. The first-person text recalls a father who sets double lessons to make up for time lost to illness, and visits to a grandfather and grandmother whose house on the Friedberg street looks as if it had once been a fortress, with a battlemented gate.
Behind the house is a garden with vine trellises, a vegetable plot, flower borders, espalier peach-trees on the south wall and rows of currant and gooseberry bushes. Under the heading Strasburg Manners, the Strasburgers are called passionate walkers, and their pleasure-grounds and the varied costume of the women are described.
