About this book
The Poems of Goethe is translated in the original metres by Edgar Alfred Bowring. The book begins with the translator's original dedication to the Countess Granville, where he writes that the beauties of the great original must be diminished in passing through a translator's hands.
In one poem a godlike woman appears on the clouds and asks the speaker, "Dost thou not know me?" Another is a pair of voices, The Doubters and the Lovers, dated 1807 to 1808: the doubters ask why lovers vex themselves with sonnets, and the lovers answer that the fire of love must be kept alive. The book also contains a Charade, dated verses, and a poem that plays on the word drunkenness and mentions love, song and wine.
