About this book
A late return from a social gathering unsettles Catherine Murchison's confidence in her comfortable home in Roxton. She finds her physician husband, James, asleep in his study beside signs of drinking. Warwick Deeping's 1907 novel places this discovery against James's earlier struggle with alcohol and Catherine's efforts to support him. Professional standing and married life become closely entangled in the troubles facing the family.
The later excerpt brings their circumstances into sharp domestic focus. James saves small sums to buy pantomime tickets, while Catherine makes a pudding in a little kitchen. Their daughter Gwen's poor health adds to the strain. Through such ordinary details, the novel examines loyalty, wounded pride and the pressure of public respectability. It offers readers of domestic fiction a picture of an English doctor's household coping with hardship, with family affection tested through practical needs as well as emotional demands.
