About this book

Bill Bowls's first vessel is a plank on a lake, with his father teaching him how to handle a squall. That childhood mishap sets the tone for R. M. Ballantyne's adventure for young readers: practical seamanship, physical courage and a cheerful response to danger. The opening follows Bill from his early love of water into coastal trade and voyages abroad. A passage aboard a ship bound for China brings him face to face with a harsh captain and a storm that drives the vessel towards rocks.

The story also turns to naval history, describing Nelson's preparations and the French fleet's position before the Battle of the Nile. Alongside action at sea, Ballantyne pauses to discuss national pride, courage and the reasons for fighting. Readers interested in sailing stories and historical fiction will find a tale shaped by both a sailor's experiences and the author's stated moral views.
