About this book
Trams, toy carts, pastry shops and marching bands fill the world that Bay and Padie share. Furnley Maurice writes Australian children's verse in which ordinary household scenes open into fairy games and imagined adventures. A boy follows a band to discover where its music comes from; another looks into a pool and finds the sky. Childlike speech, bouncing rhythms and repeated sounds give these poems a voice suited to reading aloud.
Between the poems, short passages headed "Whisper!" invite hushed attention to Micky, a mysterious presence heard around the house. The mood also turns toward the adults watching over children: a mother tries to settle a restless baby, while "Barter" counts the time, care and postponed ambitions that family life requires. Readers can enjoy both the boys' lively discoveries and the tenderness, worry and practical work surrounding them.
