About this book

The Best Portraits in Engraving is by Charles Sumner and is marked Fifth Edition. The opening says engraving is one of the fine arts that has been the especial handmaiden of painting. The writer says that in one series of portfolios in the Paris cabinet he counted no less than forty-seven portraits of Franklin and forty-three of Lafayette.

The text says the great portraits of modern times constitute a very short list, like the great poems or histories. Sir Joshua Reynolds is quoted explaining the difference between an historical painter and a portrait-painter, remarking that the former paints men in general. The text calls the Doctors of the Church the first of English engravings, and says it is after the picture of Guido.
