About this book
The preface describes telephony as an art that has become fully grown in thirty-five short years, with millions of telephones distributed at home and abroad. Before Bell begins experiments with his telegraph, the account shifts its setting from Canada to Massachusetts. The Boston Board of Education offers Graham five hundred dollars to introduce his teaching system in a recently opened school for deaf-mutes, and the young man agrees.
The account of early telephone exchanges describes boys whittling switchboards, swearing at subscribers, playing tricks with wires, and roaring loudly as they add to the business's troubles. The account says that the boys prove immune to schemes of discipline and are removed by general consent, with a soft-voiced girl taking the noisy boy's place.
