About this book
An uneasy meeting in a dark Highland pass brings Captain Ian Gordon face to face with Jock Farquharson, the outlaw known as the Black Colonel. Gordon serves the Hanoverian king, while Farquharson resents the government that has put a price on his head. Their wary exchange moves between political loyalty, wounded pride and a shared interest in a woman of the Forbes family. Even the Colonel's talk with his spirited horse, Mack, reveals his mixture of charm and temper.
James Milne's historical novel sets personal attachments against the unsettled life of eighteenth-century Aberdeenshire. Marget's mother asks Gordon for help when a proposed match appears tied to the restoration of her family's position. Gordon sets out across the hills to intervene. Readers can expect Highland landscape, clan connections and romantic rivalry, as Gordon weighs duty against feeling.
