About this book
The Black Death in the Fourteenth Century is a book by J. F. C. Hecker. The preface speaks of an important page of the history of the world that treats of a convulsion of the human race, unequalled in violence and extent. The preface speaks of an universal pestilence which extended from China to Iceland and Greenland.
The text quotes Boccacio as saying that husband and wife, father and mother, with two or three children, were frequently borne to the grave on the same bier. The text quotes another contemporary on the conduct of the priests: in large and small towns, they had withdrawn themselves through fear, leaving the performance of ecclesiastical duties to the few who were found courageous and faithful enough to undertake them. The text says that during the prevalence of the Black Plague, the charitable orders conducted themselves admirably.
