About this book
Edward Berdoe's book follows the history of medicine from its earliest forms. A chapter summary for Chapter II, "Animism," asks "Who discovered our medicines?" and lists topics including the priest and the medicine-man as originally one, disease as the work of magic, and disease-demons. The frontispiece is titled "Expelling the Disease-Demon."
The text gives examples from many peoples: the Watje, who blame evil spirits they call Dobbo, the Antilles Indians in Columbus's time, who pretended to pull the disease off the patient, and the Badaga of the Neilgherries, who make talismans from earth and ashes of funeral pyres. Another passage describes a plant pulled up with a spoken charm and marked with the sign of the cross, and remarks on medical learning among the Angles, Saxons and Goths. An index names figures such as Seneca, Serapion and Semmelweis.
