About this book
The Black Death, and The Dancing Mania is credited to J. F. C. Hecker and was translated by B. G. Babington. The introduction says Justus Friedrich Karl Hecker was one of three generations of distinguished professors of medicine. The introduction says Justus Friedrich Karl Hecker was born at Erfurt in January, 1795.
The text says the plague was seen twice in Avignon, first in the year 1348, from January to August, and twelve years later, in the autumn. Boccacio, who was an eye-witness of its incredible fatality in Florence, gives a more lively description of the attack of the disease than his non-medical contemporaries, and names tumours in the groin and in the axilla, called pest-boils. Of one attack, the text says many of those who happened to be seated when it commenced bent their bodies rapidly backwards and forwards during its continuance, making a corresponding motion with their arms, like persons sawing wood.
