About this book
The Book of Susan is a novel by Lee Wilson Dodd. The narrator says that this book is about Susan, but that it will be simpler if the reader knows something, too, concerning her scribe. The narrator describes himself as a man whose inherited income permitted him to be an idler, and whose tastes urged him to write precious little essays about precious little for the more precious reviews.
Susan, sitting by them, for the first time within their memory bursts into flooding, uncontrollable tears, and they are annoyed. The narrator dates certain ugly things to June twentieth of the year 1907, which happened to be his birthday, his thirty-third, not precisely celebrated since it was also the anniversary of the day his wife had left him, two years before. The Widow Guyot, at the narrator's elbow, says in a husky, passionless voice that one thing troubles her: "She did not receive the last rites, m'sieu."
