About this book
Jewel: A Chapter in Her Life is a story by Clara Louise Burnham, offered in loving acknowledgment to F. W. R. Chapter I, The New Coachman, has a speaker telling 'Zekiel to polish up those buckles real good, and saying of Fanshaw that you could most see your face in the harness always. Mrs. Forbes recounts telling Mrs. Evringham that everything is in order, and hearing, “Well, leave it for me next time, Mrs. Forbes.”
Mr. Evringham hesitates, somewhat embarrassed under the blue eyes, and the narration says his son had married beneath him, some working girl probably. Jewel looks up at her companion, is surprised to see her lashes wet, and whispers, “What's the matter, cousin Eloise?”
